Letters: The ominous redwood growth spurt

Share

Re “Growth spurt,” Aug. 14

“Finally, some good news about the effects of climate change,” The Times writes of the recent growth spurt in California redwoods and sequoias. What kind of logic is that? It’s like saying, “Finally, some good news about my cancer: I’m losing weight.”

Furthermore, the article says that “global warming is generally expected to make wet areas wetter and arid regions drier.” When more drought and floods are expected by almost all climate scientists, this is an understatement. It’s like saying that when your house is burning down, the water in the tub is generally expected to warm.

Yes, the growth of the redwood trees has waxed and waned through eons and across climates. But that doesn’t mean humans will with any level of comfort.
