Why ‘Never Trump’ movement was nonsense after Nov. 8

Share

So the Electoral College results are in, and all but a handful of electors voted as they had pledged, and Donald Trump will take over as president one month and one day from today.

Perhaps the millions of Americans who seemed to think it was possible the New York Republican would never take office despite a fairly decisive Electoral College lead can return from Fantasyland now and deal with reality. Yes, Hillary Clinton got nearly 3 million more votes. Yes, Russia very likely used hacking of embarrassing Democratic National Committee emails to hurt Clinton and help Trump. Yes, Trump is coming off a campaign in which he repeatedly said offensive, even appalling things.

But since Trump’s victory became clear the night of Nov. 8, the “Never Trump” movement has been nonsense. Not just because it didn’t have a chance of blocking him from becoming the 45th president. Because trying to isolate and marginalize a president-elect is both futile and a really bad strategy.

Anyone saying “Not my president,” stop. Trump will be next month. Trying to ostracize him didn’t work when he was a candidate. It won’t work now.

Any movement that wants to moderate or stop policy changes the Trump administration may seek needs to engage its ideas head-on.
