Readers React: ‘Diversity’ classes are un-American

Share

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block says that diversity classes will be an important academic goal. (“UCLA again considering diversity class requirement,” May 4)

I submit that they have nothing to do with academics and only serve the agenda of people who want to foster some weird kind of 21st century tribalism.

Diversity classes serve only to reduce people to their most basic level of ethnicity or gender. In short, they are the opposite of what the United States stands for. The more one filters his life through the lens of whichever brand of victimhood he chooses, the less likely he is to ever feel like an actual part of society.

I submit that if you want to get people to start treating one another better, classes in common good manners would go a long way toward doing that, since implicit in good manners are such things as listening skills and allowing for people’s individuality.
