Readers React: Democracy in Santa Monica

In your article, Democratic Assemblyman Richard Hershel Bloom, a former Santa Monica mayor, attributes the rescinding of the Hines 26th Street project to bullying on the part of those who opposed it. (“Santa Monica City Council scraps Bergamot Transit Village plan,” May 14)

As one of the Santa Monica residents who worked with Residocracy.org to gather more than 13,000 signatures to put the project to a vote, I feel compelled to say that nothing is further from the truth. What is really going on here is citizen participation in the democratic process.

If there is any bullying, it is on the part of developers who have taken control of the Santa Monica City Council and are trying to dictate the future of our city.

I am saddened to see that Bloom aligns himself with those forces instead of with the citizens of the community he once represented.
