Letters: Obamacare and church rights

Share

Re “More suits are filed over birth control,” May 22

So the Roman Catholic hierarchy continues to fight for the right to deny contraceptive coverage to the employees of organizations affiliated with the church, even if their primary purpose is not ministry — which has been the long-standing exception to a church’s right not to follow a law applicable to all other employers: if it would conflict with the fundamental doctrines of its ministry.

My proposal is that the church show the depth of its commitment to this doctrine by simply excommunicating all Catholics who use contraception. It’s all well and good to try to deny family planning healthcare coverage to employees, many of whom are not Catholic, but if the church really wants to show its commitment, this would be a convincing way to do it.
