Re “Palestinians reject peace, Romney says in video,” Sept. 19

Mitt Romney has shown himself to be lacking in diplomatic skills, but this doesn’t mean that he doesn’t know what is going on. His comments about the failure of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians may not be diplomatic, but they are correct.

Hamas and Fatah won’t talk to each other, much less with Israel. They won’t recognize Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, and they continue to teach hate in their educational institutions and refuse to negotiate without preconditions. Several U.S. presidents have tried to broker peace deals but have failed.

Romney understands that peace talks with the Palestinians will not go anywhere without a change in Palestinian leadership. Like it or not, Romney got it right this time.

Is there an effective difference between Romney and President Obama?

Both have said the goal is a Palestinian state alongside Israel. Romney says he will not work to make that happen because the Palestinians will not accept Israel. Obama does not work to make it happen because he refuses to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law and human rights by expanding settlements and dispossessing Palestinians.

Either way, it looks the same.
