Letters: Runways aren’t LAX’s problem
Re “LAX fails to land in top 100 airport list,” May 6
Though the article accurately cites badly outdated facilities that result in a poor public opinion of Los Angeles International Airport and a low worldwide ranking among airports, it fails to connect the dots.
The City Council approved a plan to move one of LAX’s four runways closer to Westchester, a project that will take up more than half a billion dollars of the total spent on the airport modernization.
This, despite what a spokeswoman for the airport trade group ACI World said would greatly improve LAX: signage, cleanliness, ambience and connections to mass transit. Nothing about runways having greater separation.
Fix the problems we all agree need fixing, and apply regional solutions that get cars off of the 405 Freeway. Ruining Westchester doesn’t solve any of those problems.
