Mahsa Amini died Sept. 16 in Iran after an encounter with the country’s so-called morality police. Since her death, Iranians have taken to the streets in protest of the country’s modesty laws. But what began as a call for women’s rights in Iran has since ballooned into something so much bigger.

Asal Ehsanipour

Former Los Angeles Times staffer Asal Ehsanipour was the senior producer of the podcast “Foretold.” Ehsanipour joined The Times in 2021 as a producer on “Asian Enough” and “The Envelope.” Prior to that, she was a reporter and producer for KQED Public Radio productions including “The California Report Magazine,” “Bay Curious” and “Rightnowish.” Her storytelling has taken her on private chocolate factory tours, behind-the-scenes with a queer Fleetwood Mac tribute band and to the first Black church west of the Mississippi. Her work has also been featured on PRI’s “The World,” KALW-FM’s “Crosscurrents,” “The Double Shift” podcast and more. Ehsanipour was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and is the proud daughter of Iranian immigrants.
