Ocean View girls pull away from Marina

Neighboring schools Ocean View and Marina met Tuesday in nonleague girls’ basketball action, and it was the Seahawks who got the best of this meeting.

Ocean View overcame a slow start but still managed to pull away to a 60-28 victory on the Vikings’ home floor.

Senior guard Danelle Almiranez led the scoring with 17 points and senior forward Treasure Robinson was right behind with 16 points, and sophomore shooting guard Jackie Moss grabbed seven rebounds for the Seahawks, who improved to 4-5.

Marina, led by senior guard Christina Mark’s 11 points, fell to 2-3.

“Effort and energy were lacking in the first half, but we pulled together in the second half to pull away,” Ocean View Coach Kim Morris said.

Prior to Tuesday’s game, Ocean View’s Hawk Holiday Classic tournament ended Saturday. In its final game, Ocean View was upended, 52-44, by Downey Warren in the fifth-place game of the Supreme Flight Division. Senior guard Dailyn Nguyen led Seahawks with 13 points. Senior guard Sally Morris had nine points and Robinson 11 rebounds.

Almiranez and Moss were named to the all-tournament team.

Marina plays host to Yorba Linda in a 7 p.m. nonleague game Thursday.

Ocean View next will take on Mission Viejo at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Mission Viejo High, a game that is part of the Orange County North/South Challenge. The Seahawks also travel Tuesday (1 p.m.) to face Laguna Hills in nonleague play.

•Another local girls’ basketball tournament, the Coach BK Classic, also ended Saturday at Fountain Valley High.

Huntington Beach reached the tournament’s title game where the Oilers (5-1) fell, 59-36, to Mater Dei. Senior guard Sammy Gray scored 17 in the loss. Junior forward Frankie Wade-Sanchez were named first-team all-tournament, and Gray and junior guard Kaylyn Nakaji were second-team all-tournament.

“I was very happy with how we played in this tournament, upsetting Santa Margarita and St. Anthony to get to the final,” Huntington Coach Russ McClurg said.

In previous action at the tournament, Huntington won its pool by defeating Montebello Schurr Dec. 8, 55-46. Wade-Sanchez led the scoring with 22 points. Senior center Kameelah Anderson and Gray scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Huntington played Esperanza Wednesday. The score from the nonleague game wasn’t available at press time. The Oilers travel Thursday to Arizona to compete Friday at the Nike Tournament of Champions.

Fountain Valley went 0-4 at the BK Classic, ending the tournament with a 66-44 loss to San Juan Hills in the ninth-place game. Barons junior wing Emily White was named honorable mention all-tournament.

Edison traveled Tuesday to Yorba Linda and fell to the Mustangs, 50-44, in nonleague play. Senior forward Jackie Bento scored a game-high 19 points for the Chargers (1-4) who will take on San Luis Obispo in an opening game Saturday at the Santa Barbara Tournament.

Brethren Christian closed out play Saturday at the La Verne Calvary Baptist Tournament and lost to Academy of Careers and Exploration (ACE), 46-28.

The Warriors went 1-3 at the event, taking sixth place among eight teams. Their win was a 45-4 rout of Riverside Bethel Christian. Freshman guard Gabby Pacada was named all-tournament.

BC (2-3) starts play at 6 p.m. Friday at the Liberty Christian Tournament. The Warriors open against Anaheim Cornelia Connelly, a team they lost to, 47-28, in their second game of the Calvary Baptist Tournament Dec. 7. The Warriors also will play a tournament doubleheader Saturday against San Diego Rock Academy (12:30 p.m.) and host Liberty Christian (3:30 p.m.). The tournament concludes Sunday.
