Mattingly on Quentin vs. Greinke: ‘We’re not going to start anything’

SAN DIEGO -- Carlos Quentin faces Zack Greinke on Saturday, for the first time since the infamous brawl in which Quentin charged Greinke on the mound and Greinke’s collarbone was broken. That followed Greinke hitting Quentin with a pitch, an act Quentin said was intentional and Greinke said was not.

What follows are excerpts from a pregame media briefing with Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly, which started with the manager discussing whether he anticipated any bad blood with Quentin spilling into Saturday’s game.

“I don’t expect any at all,” Mattingly said. “I’m not saying a ball doesn’t get away and he gets hit. That could happen with anybody pitching.

“I would be shocked if Zack hit him on purpose. I obviously can’t say I’m 100% sure. But I’m pretty sure Zack is not going to try to hit him. We’re not going to start anything.

“I don’t think there’s any way he’s going to be throwing at him today. Zack has had his share of issues. I know he’s been the guy in the middle of both of our things [bench-clearing brawls]. He’s been on the right side both times, in my opinion.

“We’re not in any position to deal with any of this stuff. We need Zack to go deep into a game and put a win on the board.”
