Football: Crespi’s Troy Thomas tries to come up with game plan for St. John Bosco

When Crespi Coach Troy Thomas decided to schedule St. John Bosco in a nonleague game months ago (he likes scheduling tough opponents), he had no idea he’d be down to his fifth-string running back.

The Celts (1-2) will be facing a tough task on Friday against the Braves (3-0) at Cerritos College. Asked for his game strategy, Thomas said, “Try to take 24.9 seconds every play.”

Injuries at running back have disrupted Crespi’s veer attack. Jalen Starks is out with a shoulder injury and backups are also injured. Players who were on JVs will see action.

“The problem is we’ve had injuries at the same position,” Thomas said. “We’re moving guys to running back as we speak.”

The defense will have to face a St. John Bosco team that has scored 76, 67 and 66 points in its first three games.

“They’re as good as I’ve seen,” Thomas said. “Their offense is very well coached.”

It’s the final week before Crespi begins Mission League play, so Thomas is hoping his running backs can get healthy.

“It’s a positive attitude and we’re coaching hard,” Thomas said.
