Football: Narbonne tries to avoid rebuilding year

Share

The high school football season begins with an intriguing Thursday afternoon game between two champions from last season: City Section Division I champ Narbonne taking on Northern Division champion Palos Verdes at Palos Verdes at 3 p.m.

Both schools have been hit hard by graduation, but the suspicion is that Narbonne might not have to go through too much of a rebuilding year, thanks to a couple transfer students and several backups from last year who appear ready to make an impact at the varsity level.

The key transfer is quarterback Eban Jackson from Long Beach Poly. He was sharing QB duties with the Jackrabbits until his transfer. Now he’s had all spring and summer at Narbonne to get ready to replace Troy Williams, the two-time City player of the year. Jackson doesn’t pass as well as Williams but he might be allowed to run much more than Williams.

Narbonne more than held its own in a scrimmage last week against Chaminade. The Gauchos defeated Palos Verdes, 41-0, last season.
