Football: Taft is on the comeback trail
Woodland Hills Taft, once the top football team in the City Section from the San Fernando Valley, is trying to get its program back into contention.
The Toreadors return 10 starters from a 4-6 team and have lots of promising juniors who could lead the program back if they stick around and continue their improvement.
The new quarterback, Chris Duncan, moves up from junior varsity and has been getting lots of experience in seven on seven this summer. The team’s best player might be junior defensive end Malik Davis, who’s 6 feet 2, 215 pounds.
There’s solid receivers in Jerrick Corley and Elliott Hampton. Taft scored lots of points last season, but Coach Deron Braswell needs to improve the defense and shore up an inexperienced line.
The West Valley League should be much improved with Birmingham, Chatsworth, El Camino Real and Granada Hills all having competitive teams.
