Football: What’s the scenario for a Crenshaw win over Narbonne?

Share

All signs point toward Narbonne (11-2) winning its fifth City Section Division I football championship under Coach Manuel Douglas on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Cerritos College.

The last obstacle in the way is Crenshaw (9-4), the No. 6 seed.

But what’s the scenario for a Cougars upset?

Narbonne makes a bunch of mistakes and turnovers. Crenshaw quarterback Daiyan Henley improvises, escapes the pass rush and gets the ball to Rayshawn Williams. Aundre Carter gives the Cougars a productive rushing attack to take pressure off Henley. Defensive end Derek Moore dominates on defense.

Douglas is taking no chances. He’s showing video from the 2013 game, when the Gauchos were heavily favored but lost to Crenshaw, 20-13, aided by three safeties on bad center snaps.

In truth, the pressure is on Narbonne. They’ve been too good on offense and defense to lose this final.

“Every week, it comes down to who we are,” Douglas said. “We don’t turn the ball over, waste plays or have penalties.”

The winner will advance to a regional playoff game next Friday or Saturday.
