The Philadelphia Phillies agreed to trade ace left-hander Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers for a package of prospects, two people familiar with the deal said.

Both people spoke to the Associated Press late Wednesday night on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been finalized.

Hamels has a limited no-trade clause but does not have to approve a deal to the Rangers.

The 2008 World Series most valuable player was an integral part of the greatest run in franchise history when the Phillies won five consecutive National League East titles, two pennants and one World Series from 2007 to 2011. He pitched a no-hitter on Saturday.

Outfielder Matt Holliday left the St. Louis Cardinals’ game with the Cincinnati Reds because of a right quadriceps strain.

The Boston Red Sox put center fielder Mookie Betts on the seven-day disabled list for a concussion.

The Chicago White Sox put infielder Emilio Bonifacio on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left oblique. Bonifacio was injured on a groundout to third base Tuesday night against the Red Sox.

Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez was designated for assignment by the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez, 36, was 6-4 with a 4.90 earned-run average in 17 appearances for Texas, the last two in relief. Rodriguez gave up seven runs in one inning in the Rangers’ 21-6 loss to the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

The Houston Astros designated right-hander Roberto Hernandez for assignment to create a roster spot for shortstop Jed Lowrie, who comes off the disabled list Thursday. Lowrie has been sidelined since April 27 because of a torn ligament in a thumb.

A widely reported trade that would have sent outfielder Carlos Gomez from the Milwaukee Brewers to the New York Mets for pitcher Zack Wheeler and infielder Wilmer Flores fell through, Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson said.
