The Houston Astros have added another bat to their lineup as they make a push for the postseason, acquiring two-time All-Star outfielder Carlos Gomez from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Houston also received right-hander Mike Fiers in the deal and sent four prospects to the Brewers: left-hander Josh Hader, right-hander Adrian Houser and outfielders Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana.

“This was a move with an eye toward this year, next year and the year after that, more so than five or seven years from now,” Houston General Manager Jeff Luhnow said. “That’s what our fans want. They want us to win.”

Milwaukee General Manager Doug Melvin said a trade fell through Wednesday that would have sent Gomez to the New York Mets for infielder Wilmer Flores and injured pitcher Zack Wheeler.

Houston, seeking its first postseason appearance since 2005, recently acquired top starter Scott Kazmir from the Oakland Athletics.

The 29-year-old Gomez is hitting .262 with eight homers and 43 runs batted in in 74 games for the Brewers this season.

Gomez, who won a Gold Glove in 2013, is a nine-year veteran coming off a career-best season last year, when he hit .284 with 34 doubles, 23 homers, 73 RBIs and 34 steals. Gomez and Mike Trout are the only players with at least 100 steals and 50 home runs over the last four seasons.

Fiers is 5-9 with a 3.89 ERA in 21 starts for Milwaukee this season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates made another move to upgrade their bullpen on Thursday night, acquiring right-hander Joakim Soria from the Tigers for a minor leaguer. The 31-year-old Soria was 3-1 with 23 saves and a 2.85 ERA in 43 appearances with Detroit this season. The deal was made a few hours after the Pirates got reliever Joe Blanton from Kansas City for cash. Soria will move into a setup role in a bullpen that already ranks among the league’s best. Pittsburgh’s 2.71 bullpen ERA ranked second to St. Louis for the NL lead. Pittsburgh gave up infielder JaCoby Jones, a 23-year-old who was recently promoted to double A. ... The Cleveland Indians dealt Brandon Moss to the St. Louis Cardinals, who were in the market for an outfielder after seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday reinjured his right quadriceps Wednesday and later went on the disabled list. The Indians received minor league pitcher Rob Kaminsky, a first-round pick in 2013. Moss had 15 homers and 50 RBIs in 94 games. ... The New York Yankees acquired utility player Dustin Ackley from the Seattle Mariners for a pair of minor leaguers, right-hander Jose Ramirez and outfielder Ramon Flores. The Yankees also placed right-hander Michael Pineda (9-7, 3.97 ERA) on the 15-day disabled list with a right flexor forearm muscle strain.
