Looking exhausted down the stretch, No. 19 Duke gave away a 16-point second-half lead against Notre Dame and lost in overtime, 84-79, in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament quarterfinals in Washington.

V.J. Beachem scored 19 points, including a couple of key three-pointers late in the second half, for fourth-seeded Notre Dame (21-10), which also beat Duke a year ago en route to winning the league tournament and earlier this season at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Grayson Allen led defending national champion Duke (23-10) with 27 points, but there wasn’t much help.

No. 7 North Carolina 88, Pittsburgh 71: The Tar Heels got off to a fast start at the ACC tournament as the regular-season champions took the first step toward their first conference title since 2008.

Four players scored in double figures as the Tar Heels (26-6) shot 58.9% from the field and pulled away from Pittsburgh (20-11).

Joel Berry II led North Carolina with 20 points on seven-for-eight shooting, and Brice Johnson added 19 on eight-for-11 shooting. The Tar Heels will face Notre Dame in the semifinals Friday.

Jamel Artis and Michael Young each scored 19 points for the Panthers, who still should be NCAA tournament-bound despite the loss.

No. 1 Kansas 85, Kansas State 63: Perry Ellis scored 21 points, Frank Mason III added 16 and the Jayhawks won easily in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

The Jayhawks (28-4), who won their 12th consecutive regular-season crown, led 45-30 at halftime before pushing their advantage past 20 for much of the second half. They coasted the rest of their way to a semifinal matchup Friday night with No. 22 Baylor.

The eighth-seeded Wildcats (17-16) were led by Justin Edwards, who made five three-pointers and had 23 points. But the senior guard didn’t get nearly as much help as he had in a first-round victory over Oklahoma State.

No. 22 Baylor 75, No. 23 Texas 61: Taurean Prince had 24 points and 13 rebounds, Rico Gathers added 13 points and the Bears’ baffling zone defense shut down the Longhorns in the Big 12 quarterfinals.

The fifth-seeded Bears (22-10) opened a 15-point lead in the first half, then used Coach Scott Drew’s trademark defense to keep the fourth-seeded Longhorns (20-12) from coming back.

No. 3 Villanova 81, Georgetown 67: Josh Hart scored 25 points, Ryan Arcidiacono added 19 points and six assists, and the Wildcats pulled away in the second half in New York to open their bid for consecutive Big East tournament titles.

Kris Jenkins added 15 points for the top-seeded Wildcats (28-4), who made 13 of their 21 three-point attempts.

The eighth-seeded Hoyas (15-18), whose first-round game ended about 15 hours earlier, led 47-46 midway through the second half before Arcidiacono and Hart led Villanova on a game-breaking run.

No. 5 Xavier 90, Marquette 72: Trevon Bluiett matched his career high with 24 points and the Musketeers (27-4) dominated from start to finish in a Big East quarterfinal.

Illinois 68, No. 20 Iowa 66: Jalen Coleman-Lands scored 17 points and Malcolm Hill broke a tie with a 16-foot jumper with 1:14 to go, helping the Illini fend off the Hawkeyes’ frantic comeback for an upset in the Big Ten tournament first round at Indianapolis.

Illinois (15-18) won for only the second time in six games — this one after allowing the Hawkeyes (21-10) to score 11 consecutive points in 98 seconds to tie the score at 66 with 1:40 to play.

Iowa (21-10) was led by Peter Jok, who tied his career high with 29 points before fouling out. Jarrod Uthoff scored 21 points as the Hawkeyes lost for the fifth time in six games.
