Braves to retire Bobby Cox’s number

Former Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox, who retired last year after 29 years as a manager, including 25 with Atlanta, will have his number retired in Atlanta before Friday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.

Cox, 70, also will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame.

Cox was replaced by his former coach Fredi Gonzalez, who has the Braves in second place in the National League East and leading the NL wild-card race.

Cox is now a consultant for the team.

Texas Rangers outfielder Craig Gentry was reinstated from the seven-day concussion disabled list.

The move Thursday came on an off day for the Rangers before 10 consecutive road games. Gentry was on the list for two weeks, and played five rehabilitation games for triple-A Round Rock (Texas).

Right-hander Darren O’Day was optioned to Round Rock to make room on the active roster.

Four minor league players were suspended for violating baseball’s drug policy.

Chicago Cubs catcher Luis Flores and Minnesota first baseman Kennys Vargas each was penalized 50 games Thursday by the commissioner’s office after positive drug tests. Free-agent pitcher Emanuel Ramirez also drew a 50-game penalty.

Houston pitcher Euris Quezada was suspended 25 games for his violation.
