Troy Matteson leads by three strokes at Rio Grande

Troy Matteson shot a six-under 66 in the Puerto Rico Open to open a three-shot lead as he goes after a third U.S. PGA Tour victory at Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

Matteson seized control at Trump International Golf Club by matching the best score of the day, finishing with seven birdies and a bogey to reach 16 under.

Hunter Haas was second after his second straight 68 and Michael Bradley was third at 12 under after a 68.

Utah fires Boylen as basketball coach

Utah men’s basketball coach Jim Boylen was fired Saturday, two days after the Utes ended a second straight losing season with a loss to San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament.

During four seasons at Utah, Boylen was 69-60 overall, including 32-32 in the Mountain West. This season, the Utes lost eight of their last 11 and finished with a 13-18 overall record and 6-10 in the conference. Last season, Utah went 14-17 overall.

The move was not unexpected, especially with the Utes moving to the more competitive Pacific 12 Conference next season.

Debbie Ryan, who built Virginia’s women’s basketball program into a perennial NCAA tournament team and overcame pancreatic cancer, has resigned after 34 years and 736 victories.

Ryan’s resignation is effective at the end of the season. The Cavaliers (16-15) are not expected to make the NCAA tournament field, but the 58-year-old Ryan is hoping to receive a WNIT invitation.

The Washington Nationals have optioned top prospect Bryce Harper to Class A Hagerstown, saying the top overall pick in last year’s draft needs to get more playing time to prepare for the season.

The 18-year-old Harper, who hit .389 in 13 spring games, was disappointed but determined to make it back to the big leagues as soon as possible.

Harper was a catcher for most of his high school and college career, but the Nationals drafted him as an outfielder, and used him exclusively as a right fielder in spring training.

The Philadelphia Phillies and General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. agreed to a four-year contract extension.

UC Irvine, behind four RBIs by Jordan Fox, defeated Sacramento State, 5-3, to give head Coach Mike Gillespie his 900th career victory.

Gillespie, in his 23rd year of Division I coaching and fourth season with the Anteaters, has a 900-526-2 career record. No. 22-ranked UC Irvine improved its record to 11-1 on the season.

ESPN.com reported that the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Zuffa LLC, has agreed in principle to purchase Strikeforce, essentially its only competitor in the mixed martial arts market.

Olympic champion Christine Nesbitt of Canada won the women’s 1,000-meter race at Inzell, Germany, ending Ireen Wust’s winning streak at the speedskating world championships.

Nesbitt finished in 1 minute 14.84 seconds, 0.58 of a second ahead of the Wust. The Dutch skater won the 3,000 on Thursday and the 1,500 Friday. Heather Richardson of the U.S. took the bronze.

Bob de Jong followed up his win in the 5,000 meters on Friday by claiming gold in the men’s 10,000 with the fastest time ever set on a European track.

The 34-year-old Dutch world champion clocked 12:48.20 to beat countryman Bob de Vries by 16.42 seconds.

Russia’s Ivan Skobrev claimed the bronze.

Two-time Olympic champion Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic won the women’s 5,000, finishing in 6:50.83. Germany’s Stephanie Beckert took silver.
