Blake Thomsen boosts Mater Dei in 12-2 victory over Hart
What’s Blake Thomsen of Santa Ana Mater Dei going to do for an encore in his senior year?
He has a 4.6 grade-point average. He got a 2300 out of a possible 2400 on the SAT. He’s headed to Princeton.
Well, he’d probably settle for a trip to Dodger Stadium to play for the Division 1 baseball championship.
Thomsen, a senior shortstop, is certainly doing his best to help No. 2-seeded Mater Dei. He had a two-run double and a three-run home run Tuesday as the Monarchs defeated Newhall Hart, 12-2, in a Southern Section second-round playoff game. Mater Dei advances to play Anaheim Esperanza, a 20-9 winner over Newbury Park, in Friday’s quarterfinals.
Considering how well Mater Dei (23-5) has been hitting the ball, it’s going to take a lot of runs to beat the Monarchs.
Newhall Hart (20-7) came in with a highly regarded pitching staff, but Mater Dei overcame a 2-1 deficit with a four-run fourth inning and later pounded Indians relief pitchers.
“Our offense, all the way through, we’re not going to give you any breaks, from the leadoff guy all the way down to the ninth hitter,” Thomsen said.
The No. 9 hitter, Ryan Barr, had three singles. Ty Moore, a junior who’s committed to UCLA, had a two-run double, increasing his school-record hit total to 50.
Sophomore pitcher Davis Tominaga (5-0) overcame a slow start to throw a complete game, striking out 10.
