Braylon Edwards signs with Jets days after calling them ‘idiots’

Braylon Edwards knows the New York Jets system and has a good rapport with quarterback Mark Sanchez. With the Jets in need of healthy wide receivers and Edwards in need of a job, his signing with the team Tuesday makes perfect sense.

Except for the fact that he referred to the people in charge of the team as “idiots” on Twitter just last week.

But Edwards did apologize and clarify his comment the next day. And he seems pretty excited to be back with the team, whether it’s run by idiots or not, judging by the number of feel-good tweets he’s sent out in the last 18 hours.

A sampling:

“It feels great to be going home. Thanks to all of jet nation that continuously supported me and pushed for me. I’m back”;

“It’s beyond belief to see the level of support and love that jet nation has for the kid. I’m ready to rock and roll”;

“Back in the right colors” (accompanied by a photo of himself in a Jets jersey).

Edward’s tone was much different last week when he attempted to defend Sanchez, who was benched the previous game in favor of third-string quarterback Greg McElroy.

“Don’t blame Sanchez,” Edwards tweeted. “I played there. Blame the idiots calling shots. Mark is a beast and will [prove] it when given a proper chance.”

But he took it all back the next day. “I would like to apologize to the Jets family and my fans for my emotional outburst,” Edwards said via Twitter. “Mark is a friend and former teammate, who I wholeheartedly support. Nonetheless, I have disrespected and insulted an administration that I have the utmost respect for.”

Edwards is an eight-year veteran and former Pro Bowler who spent most of 2009 and all of 2010 with the Jets. He has since played for the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks, who released him off the injured-reserve list last week.
