Jovan Belcher sent text about wanting to shoot his girlfriend

Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher sent a text message to a friend saying he “would shoot” the mother of his child if she didn’t leave him alone, according to official case files.

Less than two months later, Belcher did just that, killing longtime girlfriend Kasandra Perkins and then driving to the Chiefs practice facility, where he shot himself to death in front of his coaches and general manager on Dec. 1.

The Kansas City Star first reported the text message from Belcher to his secret girlfriend, who is said to have thought he was kidding at the time.

According to the Star, Jackson County prosecutors closed the case Friday, ruling the deaths a murder-suicide, and released the case file to the public.

The file contains some background from the Belcher and Perkins’ tumultuous relationship, as well as some previously unknown details from the tragic day.

Belcher is said to have kissed his mother and daughter as well as Perkins’ body while repeatedly apologizing before leaving the scene of the crime.

And as Belcher stood before Chiefs Coach Romeo Crennel and others with a gun to his own head, Crennel is said to have told him, “You’re taking the easy way out!”

It’s a disturbing story, but the Star covers it well.
