Cowboys’ Jason Witten sets season receptions record by tight end

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has set a new record for receptions by a tight end in a single season, the second consecutive day a receiving record has fallen in the NFL.

Witten made two catches in overtime against New Orleans on Sunday to give him 103 receptions this season.

Tony Gonzalez, who is now with the Atlanta Falcons, set the record with 102 catches when playing for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2004.

Witten’s two catches in overtime gave him six for 60 yards in the game, which the Saints won, 34-31, on a 20-yard field goal by Garrett Hartley.

On Saturday, Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson shattered the yards receiving record for a season when he had 11 receptions for 225 yards to blow past the previous mark of 1,848 yards set by Jerry Rice in 1995.

Johnson now has 117 receptions this season for 1,892 yards.
