Serena wins Bank of the West title

Serena Williams overcame a shaky start and two service breaks to beat lucky loser Coco Vandeweghe, 7-5, 6-3, on Sunday at Palo Alto for her second straight Bank of the West Classic title.

Eight days after winning Wimbledon, Williams saved a set point and won the final four games of the opening set. It was the 43rd WTA Tour championship of Williams’ career, tying older sister Venus for the most among active players.

The first all-American WTA final on home soil in eight years was hardly a one-sided affair.

The 20-year-old Vandeweghe, who failed to make it out of qualifying and got into the main draw only when Bojana Jovanovski withdrew because of an injury, moved the 14-time Grand Slam champion all over the court to give Williams her only real challenge of the week.

The final result was still the same.

The fourth-ranked Williams, still jet-lagged from traveling more than 5,000 miles and eight time zones from the All England Club, never looked at her dominating best at Palo Alto. But she did exactly what she wanted to do all week: just win.

The last player to win consecutive titles at Palo Alto was Kim Clijsters in 2005-06. Clijsters is also second behind the Williams sisters with 41 WTA titles.

Top-seeded John Isner repeated his Hall of Fame Tennis Championships title by beating Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt, 7-6 (1), 6-4, at Newport, R.I.

The 6-foot-9 American was not broken in the match to earn the fourth ATP title of his career. He held serve in 57 of 58 games in the tournament.

Top-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia won his first title of the year, beating Juan Monaco of Argentina, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, in a rain-delayed Mercedes Cup final at Stuttgart, Germany.

Tipsarevic is ranked No. 8 and was the only top-10 player not to have won a tournament this year. The second-seeded Monaco was seeking his third title of the year.

David Ferrer won his second Swedish Open title by defeating fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, 6-2, 6-2, at Bastad.

The No. 5-ranked Ferrer was never challenged during the clay-court match, which was his 11th victory over Almagro.

Marin Cilic became the first player from the country in 22 years to win the Croatia Open by beating Marcel Granollers of Spain, 6-4, 6-2, in the final at Umag.

Top-seeded Sara Errani cruised past Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, 6-1, 6-3, to win the Italiacom Open at Palermo, Sicily.

Knicks’ Kidd arrested, faces DWI charge

New York Knicks point guard Jason Kidd was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after police said he crashed his sport utility vehicle into a telephone pole in the Hamptons on Sunday, days after signing with the Knicks.

Treated at a hospital for minor injuries after the crash, Kidd was arraigned on a misdemeanor driving-while-intoxicated charge and released without bail, Southampton Town police said.

Kidd’s agent didn’t immediately respond to phone or email messages. The Knicks, who signed the 10-time All-Star in free agency last week, had no immediate comment.

Kidd, 39, was alone in the 2010 Cadillac Escalade when it hit a pole and veered into the woods about 2 a.m. in Water Mill, police said.

The Knicks signed Kidd away from the Dallas Mavericks in a deal that will pay him about $3 million a year. Kidd had played in New Jersey, leading the Nets to two NBA Finals appearances, before being traded to Dallas and remains fond of the New York City area, where his children continue to live.

Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy and Galaxy midfielders Landon Donovan and David Beckham were named to the game-day roster for next week’s MLS All-Star game against UEFA Champions League winner Chelsea. Donovan and Beckham were selected to the MLS First XI in a fan vote last week, Donovan for the 12th time and Beckham for the third time. This marks the first All-Star nod for Kennedy.

Denver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil has been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm in Florida.

Court records show the 28-year-old is facing the third-degree felony charge in Miami-Dade County. Det. Vivian Hernandez said that Dumervil and another man were arrested Saturday in Miami Beach but that no further details were available.

A spokesman for the Broncos said the team is aware of the matter and is continuing to gather facts.
