Angels’ Jered Weaver to start Wednesday against Giants

Jered Weaver will come off the disabled list and start Wednesday night’s interleague game against the San Franciscio Giants in Angel Stadium, Manager Mike Scioscia said Monday.

Weaver, who has not pitched since suffering a lower-back strain in the first inning against the New York Yankees on May 28, will be limited to 80 to 90 pitches, Scioscia said.

The Angels had the option of sending Weaver out for a one-game rehabilitation stint, “but we didn’t want him to waste bullets in the minor leagues,” Scioscia said. “There’s no reason he shouldn’t get through the fifth or sixth inning.”

Scioscia said he has not decided which pitcher will be pulled from the rotation to make room for Weaver, but the likely move will be to send Garrett Richards back to triple-A Salt Lake, where he can remain stretched out and on a regular schedule as a starter and be ready if another rotation spot opens up.

Richards is 2-0 with an 0.86 earned run average in four games, three of them starts, after throwing eight shutout innings in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Arizona, a game in which the right-hander was throwing 96 mph in the eighth inning.

There has been speculation that struggling Ervin Santana will be sent to the bullpen, but the right-hander’s one-hit shutout of the Diamondbacks on Saturday night probably solidified his rotation spot.

Dan Haren and C.J. Wilson will remain in the rotation. The only other possible move would be with Jerome Williams, but the right-hander takes a 6-4 record and 4.20 ERA into Monday night’s start against the Giants and has done nothing to warrant a demotion to the bullpen.

The Giants will counter Monday night with right-hander Matt Cain, who threw a perfect game in his last start Wednesday against the Houston Astros. It is San Francisco’s first game in Angel Stadium since losing Game 7 of the 2002 World Series to the Angels.

The Angels made three roster moves Monday afternoon, activating catcher Bobby Wilson off the seven-day concussion DL, recalling utility infielder Andrew Romine from Salt Lake and designating reliever David Pauley for assignment.
