Was Davey Johnson right in using insider info on Joel Peralta?

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Joel Peralta was ejected from Tuesday’s game against the Washington Nationals before throwing even one pitch because umpires discovered pine tar on his glove.

While Peralta was taking his warmup tosses on the mound, Nationals Manager Davey Johnson asked umpires to inspect his glove. Peralta used to pitch for the Nationals.

Umpire Tim Tschida said there was “a significant amount of pine tar on his glove,” an automatic ejection.

Peralta tipped his cap to the Nationals’ dugout while walking to the dugout.

Rays Manager Joe Maddon said that Johnson violated one of the unwritten rules of baseball. “Johnson’s actions were cowardly, bush, bogus, insider trading, way too easy,” Maddon said. Apparently, the belief in baseball is you don’t turn in a former teammate for something you know he did when he was on your team.

Johnson defended his actions, and all but admitted he knew Peralta had pine tar on his glove because he did when he pitched for the Nationals.

“Well, he pitched here,” Johnson said when asked why he had the umpires check the glove. “I don’t think it’s a secret.

“I was hesitant to do it. Tim [Tschida] was looking at me kind of grinning. He said, ‘What do you want?’ I walked out and said, ‘Why don’t you check it, just to make sure.’ ”
