Kendall Marshall undergoes surgery for broken wrist

Kendall Marshall says he’s screwed. North Carolina fans hope that means the Tar Heels are not.

The sophomore point guard tweeted, “Successful morning, Im screwed,” following surgery to insert a screw in his broken right wrist Monday afternoon. Marshall played nearly seven minutes after sustaining the injury during the Tar Heels’ 87-73 victory over Creighton on Sunday night.

But even with his son’s upbeat Twitter message, Dennis Marshall said it is too soon to tell whether Marshall will be able to join the Tar Heels for their Sweet 16 game Friday against Ohio, saying all decisions will be based on “what would be best for Kendall in the long term.”

“I don’t know because Kendall’s just coming out of his anesthesia, we haven’t talked and I don’t know how he’ll feel four days from now,” Dennis Marshall said. “We just don’t know.

“Is it impossible he plays this weekend? No, it’s not. Is it likely he plays next weekend? It definitely is. It’s something we just don’t know.”

He added that said the family and Coach Roy Williams likely would not discuss Marshall’s playing status for the next couple of days.

Marshall is seen to be key to the top-seeded Tar Heels’ shot at a national title. Against Creighton, he finished with 18 points to notch double figures for the sixth straight game. He also had 11 assists after already setting the ACC‘s single-season assist record last weekend.
