‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Paul Williams fight set for Sept. 15

Mexican boxing star and super-welterweight world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will defend his belt against former world welterweight champion Paul Williams on Sept. 15 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Golden Boy Promotions Chief Executive Richard Schaefer announced Tuesday.

The 20-year-old Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 knockouts) defeated Pomona’s Shane Mosley in a convincing decision May 5 at MGM Grand.

Williams (41-2, 27 KOs), formerly held the welterweight belt after defeating Mexico’s Antonio Margarito, and the hard-hitting, active southpaw from Aiken, S.C., was deemed one of boxing’s most avoided fighters.

That was before he was unmercifully knocked out in the second round by Argentina’s Sergio Martinez in November 2010.

“This is a super-fight,” Schaefer said. “The people I’ve spoken to can’t wait for this one: another big test for Canelo.”

Schaefer also announced he had finalized July 14 as a fight date after striking agreements between new World Boxing Council junior-welterweight champion Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KOs) and former champion Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KOs).

The fight will either be at Anaheim’s Honda Center or at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Events Center, Schaefer said.
