Mason Crosby keeps struggling, but Packers stand by their kicker

Mason Crosby’s team is headed in the right direction after a shaky start.

Unfortunately for the Green Bay Packers kicker, the opposite is true for him.

After a 2-3 start to the season, the Packers have won five straight and could move into a tie for first place in the NFC North with a Monday night loss by the Chicago Bears.

Crosby was five for five in field-goal attempts to start the season but has made just six of 13 since then, including a 1-for-3 performance in the Packers’ 24-20 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

In Crosby’s defense, four of his misses this season, including one Sunday, were on attempts of 50 yards or more. And he’s made four of five from the 40-to-49-yard range and is perfect from 20-to-29 yards. But field goals of 30-to-39 yards should be gimmes in the NFL, and Crosby is three for five from that range.

A six-year starter for the Packers, Crosby has connected on just 61.2% of his field-goal attempts this season, which has him on pace for what would be by far a career low.

Still, Coach Mike McCarthy didn’t even wait for questions concerning his kicker following Sunday’s game. “We will not blink as far as our commitment to him,” McCarthy said of Crosby.

Fantasy owners probably aren’t being so patient with the struggling kicker.
