In motor-racing terms, IndyCar driver Helio Castroneves found himself dropping to the rear of the pack on “Dancing with the Stars,” and now he’ll need to charge back up through the field.

But at least Castroneves survived to dance another week.

The Brazilian driver, who won the fifth season of “Dancing,” returned as part of this season’s show featuring past winners and fan favorites. His partner is professional dancer Chelsie Hightower.

Other contestants include former NFL running back Emmitt Smith and Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno.

After performing their version of jive-style dancing on Tuesday night’s second-round show, Castroneves and Hightower were among the bottom two couples based on judges’ points and viewers’ votes.

But singer Joey Fatone and partner Kym Johnson were the ones eliminated.

Castroneves called the latest episode “not fun.”

“We didn’t understand what happened, but we have to just keep hoping that the fans will stay behind us a little bit more so we can continuing moving forward,” he said.

Castroneves will definitely have to be on his game next week, when two more couples are to be eliminated.
