Kevin Love breaks hand, will miss six to eight weeks

Minnesota Timberwolves star Kevin Love broke his right hand during a workout Wednesday and will miss approximately six to eight weeks, the team announced.

The former UCLA standout broke the third and fourth metacarpals on his shooting hand the morning after scoring 24 points to go with eight rebounds in a preseason game against Maccabi Bazan Haifa.

He was also seven for seven from the free-throw line during the 114-81 victory at Target Center in Minneapolis.

Team officials said they expect to have more information on the extent of the injury after Love is examined Thursday by Dr. Andy Weiland, a hand specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

Love, a fourth-year pro and two-time all-star, led the Timberwolves in scoring and rebounding last season.

His injury could be a crushing blow for the team, which also will be without star point guard Ricky Rubio for at least the first six weeks of the season as he recovers from a torn ACL in his left knee.
