It’s a record day for USC in win over Colorado

To borrow a bit of Grantland Rice, the Coliseum was outlined in a blue-gray October sky when Lane Kiffin retired his horses to the stable.

And this happened pretty early in the second half against Colorado.

By then, the USC football coach didn’t need his A-team anymore. Their Saturday was done, just like Colorado, which barely put up a fight in its 50-6 loss to No. 11 USC.

The Trojans improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in Pac-12 Conference play while setting a slew of records in the process.

To wit:

--Receiver Robert Woods became USC’s all-time receptions leader in the second quarter when he hauled in a 17-yard-touchdown catch, giving him 217 catches to break Dwayne Jarrett’s mark of 216 set from 2004-06. Woods finished with eight catches for 132 yards and set a school record by catching four touchdowns.

--Quarterback Matt Barkley threw his 100th career touchdown pass in the second quarter when he and Woods connected on a 29-yard scoring play, making Barkley the Pac-12 Conference’s all-time leader in touchdown passes. Barkley finished the game with an incredible stat line -- 19-of-20 passing, 298 yards and a school-record-tying six touchdown passes, and he exited the game midway through the third quarter.

--And USC set a single-game school record with seven touchdown passes in one game. The seventh was thrown by Barkley’s backup, Max Wittek.

Marqise Lee caught six passes for 103 yards and a touchdown; Xavier Grimble and D.J. Morgan also caught touchdowns; and USC has scored 49 or more points in three of its last four home games.

As for Colorado, the Buffaloes did little worth mentioning here. They did show up, but only in person, not performance. Colorado had six turnovers that killed its chances and gave USC more ammunition than it needed to make this a blowout.

USC totaled 458 yards of offense (340 passing, 118 on the ground) and had 22 first downs. Colorado piled up 351 yards of offense (248 passing, 103 rushing).

Buffaloes quarterback Jordan Webb completed 18 for 35 passes for 210 yards with three interceptions.

Up next for USC is a trip to desert to face Arizona in Tucson next Saturday. The 3-3 Wildcats play host to 3-3 Washington later tonight.
