Georgia upsets BCS No. 2 Florida in mistake-filled game

Share

There was controversy a few weeks ago when Florida debuted at No. 2 behind Alabama in the Bowl Championship Series standings.

Oregon fans were curious since the Ducks were No. 2 in both polls.

Well, Florida won’t be No. 2 anymore, after losing an ugly 17-9 game to BCS No. 10 Georgia in Jacksonville.

The loss severely damages the Gators’ national title hopes. Florida (7-1) will only play No. 1 Alabama if the schools meet for the Southeastern Conference title.

Georgia (7-1), however, now controls its own destiny in the SEC East division. Georgia, seemingly out of the title race since a lopsided loss to South Carolina, is now back in the race.

Saturday’s game was as ugly as it was low-scoring. There were nine combined turnovers while Georgia, the winning team, had 14 penalties.

Both schools struggled in the annual game. For years this game has been known as “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.”

Saturday, though, there wasn’t much to celebrate.

The schools combined for six turnovers and 12 penalties — in the first half.

In related BCS news, Oregon defeated Colorado, 70-14, after leading, 56-0, at the half.
