U.S. Open women’s final moved to Sunday, men’s play resumes
NEW YORK -- Rain and wind are again playing havoc with the U.S. Open windup, with officials announcing that the women’s final between top-seeded Victoria Azarenka and fourth-seeded Serena Williams has been moved to Sunday.
The first men’s semifinal between sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych and third-seeded Andy Murray was delayed by more than an hour because of rain. The match is being played on Arthur Ashe Stadium and the first set, which was won by Berdych, 7-5, took 1 hour 18 minutes to play. Players are losing hats in the wind and shots are being sent far from where they are being aimed.
The second men’s semifinal between defending champion and second-seeded Novak Djokovic and fourth-seeded David Ferrer is scheduled next on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The women’s final, which was supposed to be played Saturday night, has been postponed until Sunday. The men’s final is scheduled for 1 p.m. Pacific time. No time has been announced for the women’s final.
If the second men’s semifinal isn’t completed Saturday, it will guarantee that the men’s final will be played on a Monday for the fifth year in a row.
The United States Tennis Assn. has already announced that beginning next year it will drop the “Super Saturday” format, in which both men’s semifinals and the women’s final are played on the last Saturday of the tournament. A USTA spokesman says a new format for the final weekend had not been finalized.
For the last two years the players, men especially, have complained about playing the semifinals and finals on back-to-back days without a rest day in between, as is the case at the other four major tournaments.
