Dodgers’ Ned Colletti still happy with trade results

PHOENIX — The Dodgers are in danger of missing the playoffs after a historic midseason spending spree. But no matter how this season plays out, General Manager Ned Colletti said he won’t change how he views their recent trades.

“I think we did a lot of good work for this year and going forward,” Colletti said. “I think the moves we made this season add to a really good foundation and a strong, strong base for years to come, regardless of how today goes or how the next three, four, five or six weeks go.”

First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is under contract for six seasons after this one and shortstop Hanley Ramirez for two. Outfielder Carl Crawford, who won’t play this season because he is recovering from elbow surgery, is under contract through 2017.

“When we do something, we look at a very broad picture,” Colletti said. “We look at next year, players who may be available in free agency. We were able to fill a lot of holes moving forward, not just the second half of this year, but for years to come.”

Colletti implied that the Dodgers will be looking to add complementary players in the off-season, rather than players of Gonzalez and Ramirez’s caliber. “A good percentage” of the team’s winter shopping was completed in the last couple of months, he said.

But for all this talk of the future, Colletti is confident the team will start scoring runs this season.

“I think every player, no matter how good they are, has ups and downs,” he said. “They go through parts of the seasons that are an adjustment period and they struggle. That’s where we are a little right now.”

Colletti pointed to the four players in the middle of the Dodgers’ lineup: Gonzalez, Ramirez, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier.

“It’s going to be tough to get through it three, four times a day,” Colletti said. “It’s a matter of time.”

Of Gonzalez in particular, Colletti said, “It’s somewhat of an adjustment. Everyone wants to do well when they get to a new club, with all the fanfare that came with the deal. Everybody goes through ups and downs.”

Schedule released

The Dodgers will open the 2013 season against the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium on April 1, according to a preliminary schedule that was released Wednesday. The regular season will end Sept. 29 at home against the Colorado Rockies.

The Dodgers’ annual series with the Angels has been reduced from six games to four. The four games will be played on consecutive days, from May 27-30. The first two games will be at Dodger Stadium and the last two at Angel Stadium.

The Dodgers’ home schedule also includes games against the New York Yankees on July 30-31 and the Boston Red Sox from Aug. 23-25. The Dodgers will face the Yankees in New York on June 18-19.

The Dodgers’ interleague schedule includes home games against the Tampa Bay Rays (Aug. 9-11), as well as visits to Baltimore (April 19-21) and Toronto (July 22-24).
