UConn announces new, fiercer logo ahead of schedule after Internet leak

The Connecticut women’s NCAA basketball title is just days old, but the logo on the team jerseys is history.

After an Internet leak on a UConn merchandise website accidentally revealed the school’s new Nike-designed logo, the university decided to made it official and announced the change ahead of schedule.

The school had planned to unveil the new logo on April 18.

The new logo features a fiercer Husky, which is good because the furry, lovable version of “Jonathan Husky” just wasn’t intimidating enough for a school that has won eight women’s NCAA tournament championships under Coach Geno Auriemma -- not to mention the three men’s national titles produced under coach Jim Calhoun before his retirement last year.

“This logo is everything that a Husky is supposed to be -- powerful, aggressive, determined,” Auriemma said in a statement. “It is looking right through you and saying ‘Do not mess with me.’ This is a streamlined, fighting dog, and I cannot wait for it to be on our uniforms and court.”

The logo will hit the campus this month and will be on the school’s athletic uniforms in the fall.

Nike, which has a marketing partnership with the school’s athletic department, designed the new logo for Connecticut at no cost, according to the Associated Press. Athletes and coaches provided input for the new look.
