Bill Cowher says he wants to coach again

Bill Cowher has not coached in the NFL for six years. So much time has passed that the man who was at one time at the top of every team’s (or at least their fans’) wish list is now barely mentioned when the NFL’s yearly coaching carousel cranks up.

Until Tuesday, when the CBS football analyst told Newsday during an event to promote the network’s Super Bowl coverage that he wanted to get back into coaching.

That comment was sure to have fans of the Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers, Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals salivating at the prospect of their team bringing in a fiery figure who coached the Pittsburgh Steelers for 15 years, taking them to the playoffs 10 times with two Super Bowl appearances and one Lombardi Trophy to show for his efforts.

But Cowher made it clear that none of those five teams had shown any interest in him and vice-versa, saying “no” four times when the notion was mentioned.

Still, he confirmed to Newsday that he does plan to coach again someday, saying that the challenge of returning after such a long layoff is one of the things that intrigues him about the prospect.

“I did it for 27 years,” he said. “You don’t just forget things overnight. One thing about this [CBS] job is it’s been really good because it allows me to study the game and do features on the game .... It’s not like I’m out of it. I know how the game is changing.”
