Shabazz Muhammad is Pac-12 top freshman

UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammad was selected the Pac-12 Conference’s freshman of the year.

Muhammad and Larry Drew II, who helped the Bruins win the conference title, were named first-team All-Pac-12. California’s Allen Crabbe was named the conference’s player of the year.

The Bruins’ Kyle Anderson was named second-team all-conference and was also on the all-freshman team.

Muhammad averaged 18.3 points per game. He is the eighth UCLA player to be named the conference’s freshman of the year.

Drew averaged 7.7 assists to lead the conference.

Anderson averaged 9.9 points and 8.9 rebounds.

Oregon’s Dana Altman was named the conference’s coach of the year.

Michael Vick’s book-signing tour has been canceled because of threats against him for running a dogfighting ring.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback was scheduled to sign copies of his autobiography, “Finally Free,” at Barnes & Noble stores in Georgia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The March 26 appearance set for Exton, Pa., was listed as canceled on the company’s website.

A person with knowledge of the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, told the Associated Press that the signings were scrapped because of threats against Vick and store employees.

Cornerback DeAngelo Hall was released by the Washington Redskins, a casualty of the team’s NFL-imposed salary-cap penalty.

Hall was cut because the Redskins were over the cap because of an $18-million sanction imposed for the way they structured contracts during the 2010 uncapped season. Without the penalty, Hall would almost certainly have remained in Washington.

The Arizona Cardinals released running back Beanie Wells after four injury-plagued seasons.

A first-round pick in 2009, Wells showed flashes of the talent he had at Ohio State, but he has played only one full season — his rookie year.

Wells eclipsed 1,000 yards and scored 10 touchdowns in 2011 but was limited to eight games last season because of a turf toe injury.

The New York Jets signed quarterback David Garrard to back up — and provide a challenge to — starter Mark Sanchez.

Garrard has not played in the NFL since 2010.

Garrard started 76 games in nine seasons with Jacksonville.

U.S. reaches final of Algarve Cup

Facing former coach Pia Sundhage for the first time, the United States women’s soccer team came from behind to draw 1-1 with Sweden at Lagos, Portugal, to advance to the Algarve Cup final for the 10th time in 11 years

The Americans will play Germany in Wednesday’s title game, seeking their ninth championship in 18 trips to the tournament.

Lisa Dahlkvist put Sweden ahead in the fourth minute of the game. Dahlkvist’s 40-yard shot came after goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris left her line for a clearance and still was trying to get back to her net.

Alex Morgan equalized in the 56th minute.

The Galaxy signed defender Kofi Opare.

The native of Ghana, selected with the 24th overall pick in this year’s draft, will be eligible to make his debut Wednesday night when the Galaxy plays host to Herediano in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal.

Kalian Sams’ ninth-inning sacrifice fly drove in Andruw Jones with the winning run, capping a comeback from a two-run, eighth-inning deficit and lifting the Netherlands past Cuba, 7-6, at Tokyo and into the World Baseball Classic semifinals.

The Netherlands, the first European team to reach the final four, advanced along with two-time defending champion Japan. At the semifinals in San Francisco on Sunday and Monday, they will be joined by two teams from among the United States, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Italy.

Usain Bolt was honored as the sportsman of the year at the Laureus Sports Awards in Rio de Janeiro, and Europe’s Ryder Cup golfers were selected the best team.

Bolt won his third Laureus Award after another dominant Olympic performance on the track at London, winning gold medals in the 100, 200 and 400-meter relay.

The European Ryder Cup team was honored for its comeback victory over the United States at Medinah.

British heptathlete Jessica Ennis was chosen the sportswoman of 2012.
