Tommy Haas upsets Novak Djokovic, 6-2, 6-4

Three-time champion Novak Djokovic lost in the fourth round of the Sony Open to Tommy Haas, 6-2, 6-4.

The defeat Tuesday night ended Djokovic’s 14-match winning streak at Key Biscayne, Fla., where he won the tournament the last two years.

The top-ranked Djokovic has lost two of his last four matches after winning 22 in a row, including the Australian Open for his sixth Grand Slam title.

Haas, who turns 35 next week, improved to 2-14 against No. 1-ranked players. His only other win came against Andre Agassi in 1999.

Haas’ opponent in the quarterfinals Wednesday will be Gilles Simon, who rallied past Janko Tipsarevic, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. For the first time in the 28-year-old tournament, there are no Americans in the men’s quarterfinals.

On the women’s side at Key Biscayne, five-time champion Serena Williams advanced to the semifinals and tied the women’s record for career victories in the tournament by beating No. 5-seeded Li Na, 6-3, 7-6 (5).

UCLA dismisses safety McDonald

UCLA safety Tevin McDonald was dismissed from the Bruins after violating team policy. McDonald, a starter the last two seasons, was suspended for the Holiday Bowl in December after a third positive drug test.

The Bruins lost three other players, as linebacker Todd Golper, wide receiver Ricky Marvray and wide receiver Jerry Rice Jr. left the team. All would have been seniors in the fall but will graduate this spring.

Sacramento is in a stronger position to persuade the NBA to keep the Kings from moving to Seattle with a deal now in place to build an 18,500-seat arena downtown.

The Sacramento City Council voted 7-2 Tuesday to approve a deal that contributes $258 million to the $447-million project.

FIFA has upheld the United States’ 1-0 win over Costa Rica in a snowy World Cup qualifier last week, saying the protest by the visitors was not filed correctly.

Costa Rica was angered by the decision of referee Joel Aguilar to allow the game in Commerce City, Colo., to be played on a snow-covered field.

Dallas Cowboys guard Josh Brent faces a Sept. 23 trial on an intoxication manslaughter charge in a car crash that killed a teammate.

Prosecutors in Dallas confirmed the trial date over the Dec. 8 crash in Irving, Texas, that killed practice squad player Jerry Brown Jr. Police have said Brent had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit for driving. Brown was a passenger.

Brent remains free on $100,000 bond and must wear an electronic ankle bracelet. If convicted he faces up to 20 years in prison.

The University at Buffalo hired former Duke standout Bobby Hurley to take over as its men’s basketball coach.

Hurley, who was introduced at a news conference Tuesday, completed his first season as an associate coach at Rhode Island this month, working under his brother, Dan Hurley. He spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at Wagner, also with Dan serving as head coach.
