Angels getting little bang for their buck ... again
The Arte of the deal.
The Angels dipped into owner Arte Moreno’s thick wallet during the off-season. Outfielder Josh Hamilton is on the books for five years, $125 million. So far, the Angels are in the red, going 15-25 through 40 games.
It tracks with the team’s previous big-check-writing forays.
2012: Albert Pujols signed a 10-year, $240-million contract. The Angels get off to a 18-22 start even with pitcher Jered Weaver going 6-1. They missed the playoffs.
1999: Mo Vaughn eats well on a six-year, $80-million deal. The Angels starve, starting 18-22. They missed
the playoffs and manager Terry Collins was fired before the season ended.
1990: Pitcher Mark Langston gets a five-year, $16-million contract to be the staff ace. The Angels started 17-23 and missed the playoffs. Langston goes 10-17.
On the other side of the ledger is Vladimir Guerrero, who signed a five-year, $120-million contract in 2004. The Angels started 26-14 and won the West Division, then lost to the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS.
