Chappin to leave Rose Bowl for job with College Football Playoff

Gina Chappin, who has run media operations for the Rose Bowl game since 2007, on Monday was named senior director of communications and brand management for the new College Football Playoff.

Chappin will remain with the Rose Bowl through next season as it celebrates its 100th-game anniversary and also hosts the last national title game in the Bowl Championship Series.

The BCS will be replaced in 2014-15 by a new four-team playoff that will use a selection committee to pick the participants.

“Gina is a perfect fit to join our team in implementing the College Football Playoff,” Bill Hancock, current BCS executive director, said in a statement. “Her extraordinary skills and personality have earned her the respect of journalists, coaches, conference commissioners and others.”

Chappin is a 1999 graduate of the University of Arizona. She joined the Rose Bowl after holding a similar position at the Fiesta Bowl.

In the new CFP system, the Rose Bowl and five other bowls will host semifinal games on a rotating basis starting in the 2014-15 season. The Rose and Sugar bowls have already been designated to host the first semifinal games.

Cowboys Stadium was awarded the first CFP title game last month at BCS commissioners’ meetings held in Pasadena.

Chappin is the fourth hire for the CFP staff, which will be headquartered in Irving, Texas. Chappin joins Hancock, the new executive director, Chief Operating Officer Michael Kelly and Chief Financial Officer Reid Sigmon. Chappin begins her new job in February 2014.
