Mark Lowe designated for assignment to make room for Jered Weaver
Angels reliever Mark Lowe, who had a 9.26 earned-run average in 11 appearances this season, was designated for assignment on Wednesday to clear a roster spot for ace Jered Weaver, who is scheduled to start Wednesday night against the Dodgers.
Lowe, a veteran right-hander who was signed in the final week of spring training, got off to a great start with the Angels, allowing no hits or runs and striking out four in four innings of his first two appearances.
But he was hit hard in his next five outings -- allowing eight earned runs in 2 1/3 innings -- missed three weeks of late April and early May because of a neck injury, and pitched in only four games in May, his last appearance coming on May 21.
With Dane De La Rosa, Robert Coello and Michael Kohn all passing Lowe on the bullpen depth chart, it was clear this week that Lowe would be the next to go. The Angels will have 10 days to trade or release Lowe. If he clears waivers, he could pitch at triple A for the Angels or become a free agent.
