Tim Lincecum gets two-year deal with San Francisco Giants

Tim Lincecum is staying put with the San Francisco Giants just as he hoped, reaching agreement Tuesday on a $35-million, two-year contract through the 2015 season.

The deal is pending a physical, which had yet to be scheduled. Lincecum has a full no-trade clause in the new deal.

General Manager Brian Sabean said when the season ended that among his priorities was bringing back the two-time National League Cy Young Award winner, who also indicated he cherishes familiarity and wanted to stay with the only club he has known. He pitched the Game 5 clincher in the 2010 World Series at Texas, then shifted to the bullpen and became a reliable reliever during the Giants’ 2012 run to their second title in three years. He pitched a no-hitter July 13 at San Diego.

The 29-year-old Lincecum just completed a $40.5-million, two-year contract.

The Cincinnati Reds stayed in-house for their next manager, giving pitching coach Bryan Price a three-year deal to try to take the team deep into the playoffs.

The job carries enormous expectations for the 51-year-old Price, who has been one of the most successful pitching coaches in the majors but has never managed at any level. He and triple-A manager Jim Riggleman were two in-house candidates considered for the job.

Dusty Baker led the Reds to three 90-win seasons and three playoff appearances in the last four years, but Cincinnati was knocked out in its first round of the postseason each time.

Williams cruises in opener

Top-ranked Serena Williams breezed past Angelique Kerber, 6-3, 6-1, at Istanbul, Turkey, to open her bid for a fourth WTA Championships title.

Williams, the defending champion, had no trouble against Kerber, who is one of the few players to beat her in 2012.

Earlier, second-ranked Victoria Azarenka overcame an erratic performance to beat an ailing Sara Errani, 7-6 (4), 6-2, in the opening match of the tournament.

Nicolas Almagro beat Pablo Andujar, 6-2, 6-3, to make a successful start to his bid for a third title at the Valencia Open in Spain.

The third-seeded Almagro reeled off winners to break Andujar five times and easily advance to the second round on the indoor hard court.

A judge refused to overturn his ruling that UCLA must give up its baseball stadium that is leased on land from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

But U.S. District Judge S. James Otero said that UCLA and another school, which were not involved in the initial lawsuit, could appeal.

The national champion Bruins have played in Jackie Robinson Stadium for nearly 50 years.

The Breeders’ Cup Classic, the $5-million showcase race of thoroughbred racing’s two-day world championships, will be run at 5:35 p.m. on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.

It will highlight the program on the second day of the 30th annual event. Nine Breeders’ Cup races will be run on that Saturday, with three others completing the 12-race card. Five races will be run on Nov. 1, with six others on the card. The big race on Friday’s program will be the $2-million Distaff, which will be run at 4:35 p.m.

John Cook, who has won 21 events on the PGA Tour and Champions Tour; Roger Kelly, a noted amateur champion in the 1930s; and Paul Runyon, a 28-time winner on the PGA Tour and noted instructor afterward, were inducted into the Southern California Golf Assn. Hall of Fame.
