Earl Campbell says Texas Coach Mack Brown must go

At Texas, losing the support of Earl Campbell might be akin to cake losing the support of frosting.

A day after USC fired Lane Kiffin, though, one of the most beloved players in Texas history has called for the ouster of Coach Mack Brown.

Campbell, the 1977 Heisman Trophy winner, told KRIV-TV in Houston he thought Brown should step down or be forced out.

“Nobody likes to get fired or leave a job, but things happen,” Campbell said, according to the Fox affiliate. “I’d go on record and say yes, I think it’s time.”

Brown is in his 16th year at Texas and led the Longhorns to the 2005 BCS title. He began the year only 22-16 the last three seasons, though, with the Longhorns 2-2 this season.

Brown said Monday he was disappointed in the comments but also said Campbell was “entitled to his opinion.”

Campbell said he approved the way USC removed Kiffin as coach.

“I’d just say this, I take my hat off for USC for what they’ve done,” Campbell said. “They didn’t mess around with it. They just said, ‘Let’s do it now.’ I think at some point our university’s people are going to have to make a decision.”

Texas is 1-0 in Big 12 play.
