Steve Nash coy on playing Saturday, ‘for sure’ on Christmas

Pau Gasol, left, and Steve Nash could only watch when the Lakers played the Washington Wizards earlier this month; now Gasol is back, and Nash expects to return no later than Christmas.

Steve Nash worked through his second consecutive full-contact practice with the Lakers after sitting out most of the season with a leg injury.

“It felt pretty good,” Nash said. “I can’t complain. It’s getting better; I’m optimistic that I’ll be able to put this behind me.”

Nash admitted he was sore after his first day on the court in seven weeks. He also said he was surprised a bit at what he was able to accomplish in practice.

Will he play on Saturday night when the Lakers visit the Golden State Warriors?

“We’ll see,” he said. “On Christmas for sure.”

Nash wouldn’t allow for better than 50-50 he’ll play over the weekend.

“I would say the odds are low,” he said.

Coach Mike D’Antoni may want Nash back more than anyone, given how much of a struggle this season has been for the 12-14 Lakers.

“Whatever day he returns will be Christmas,” D’Antoni joked.

The Lakers host the New York Knicks that day.
