Bartolo Colon and Mets finalize one-year deal for $7.25 million

Fan favorite Bartolo Colon and the Mets finalized a $7.25 million, one-year contract that will keep the pitcher in New York for a third year.

“I’ve had a great experience in New York,” Colon said through a translator. “The fans are great, being part of the postseason was great. I’ll do anything Terry (Collins) wants me to do this year, start or relieve. I just want to help us get back to the World Series”

The 42-year-old right-hander was 14-13 with a 4.16 ERA in 31 starts and two relief appearances this year, then had a 2.08 ERA in seven relief appearances during the postseason.

On Sept. 5 against Miami, he became the oldest Mets pitcher to throw a shutout and the oldest in the major leagues since Jamie Moyer in May 2010.

In other news around the majors:

--Ryan Vogelsong, a 38-year-old right-hander, agreed to a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, rejoining the team he pitched for from 2001-06.

--Reliever Nate Jones and the Chicago White Sox agreed to a complicated $8-million, three-year contract. The deal could increase to $22.55 million over six seasons if his elbow stays healthy and three options are exercised

--Former No. 1 overall draft pick Matt Bush agreed to a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers after spending 3 1/2 years in prison for a drunk driving accident in Florida that seriously injured a man. Bush said that he has been sober since the March 2012 accident after years of alcohol issues.

--Jeff Mathis agreed to a $1.5 million, one-year contract to remain with the Miami Marlins. Mathis made the same salary in 2015, when he was limited to 32 games because he missed nearly two months because of a broken finger.

--Utilityman Mike Aviles and the Detroit Tigers have agreed on a one-year contract. The versatile 34-year-old saw time at six positions for the Cleveland Indians this year, playing 11 games at second base, 28 at third base, 23 at shortstop, 34 in left field, five in center field and one in at right field.
