Chad Campbell takes Canadian Open lead with a second-round 63

Chad Campbell shot a nine-under-par 63 on Friday in the Canadian Open at Oakville, Ontario, to take a two-stroke lead over Brian Harman.

Campbell birdied all four par-five holes at Glen Abbey in his bogey-free round to reach 14-under 130. The 41-year-old Texan won the last of his four PGA Tour titles in 2007.

Harman followed his opening 65 with a 67.

Canada’s David Hearn was tied for third at 11 under after a 64.

Hearn is trying to become the first Canadian to win the event since Pat Fletcher, born in England, in 1954 at Point Grey in Vancouver. Carl Keffer is the only Canadian-born champion, winning in 1909 and 1914. Albert Murray, a Canadian also born in England, won in 1908 and 1913.

Johnson Wagner also was 11 under after a 66. Jason Day, coming off a tie for fourth Monday in the British Open, was another stroke back after a 66.

Thompson shares lead in LPGA Classic

Lexi Thompson birdied six of the first eight holes and finished with a season-best seven-under 64 on Friday for a share of the Meijer LPGA Classic lead with Alison Lee and Lizette Salas.

The 20-year-old Thompson matched Lee and Salas at nine-under 133 at Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Mich. Lee, the 20-year-old former UCLA player in her first season on the tour, had a 66, and playing partner Salas, a former Southern California star, shot a 70.

Kris Tamulis closed with a bogey on the par-four ninth hole to drop into a tie for fourth at eight under with Gerina Piller, Jaye Marie Green, Wei-Ling Hsu and Q Baek and. Tamulis shot 68, Piller 65, Baek 68, and Green and Hsu 69.

Top-ranked Inbee Park, a playoff loser last year in the inaugural event, was tied for 18th at four under after a 68. She has a tour-high three victories this season.

Thompson, winless since taking the then-Kraft Nabisco last year for her first major title, took advantage of early windless scoring conditions. Lee birdied six of her first 10 holes in her afternoon round.

Heavy rains wipe out most of Senior British Open play

Torrential rain wiped out most play at the Senior British Open with more than half the field still to start their second round in Sunningdale, England.

Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie is one of eight players on five under at the top of the leaderboard but six of them have yet to play a hole in the second round, which was suspended at 3 p.m.

Defending champion Bernhard Langer, Americans Michael Allen, Marco Dawson, Lee Janzen and Jeff Sluman, plus Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, will start their second rounds when play resumes at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Ko, Pettersen share lead at Ladies Scottish Open

Lydia Ko and Suzann Pettersen shared the first-round lead at four-under 68 in the Ladies Scottish Open at Troon, Scotland.

The second-ranked Ko, from New Zealand, had a bogey-free round at Dundonald Links in the final Ladies European Tour before the Women’s British Open next week at Turnberry. Pettersen, the Norwegian ranked seventh, had six birdies and two bogeys.

France’s Celine Herbin shot 69, and Scotland’s Kelsey Macdonald and Austria’s Christine Wolf followed at 70. England’s Laura Davies, recently inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, topped the group at 71.
