Racing! Time to look back at the best of 2017

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we wish all horses a happy birthday.

Hopefully, everyone had a good New Year’s Eve celebration and is ready for a healthy, happy and prosperous new year.

Now seems as good a time as any to look back at the best horses and horsemen of 2017 and to do so through the Eclipse Awards.

As a member of the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters, I get an Eclipse vote. I heard I gained membership to the NTWAB after losing the popular vote of members, but winning the electoral college because of the strength of winning California. So, I’m in.

I’m not submitting until Tuesday afternoon (the deadline), so if you think I’m more delusional than usual, let me know. Today we’ll look at about half of the categories.

Steeplechase: It has been years since I’ve seen a steeplechase race in person, so I have no clue. Luckily, the Daily Racing Form sends voters past performances. There were PPs from only six horses, so that narrows the field in this category. So, how about (1) Scorpiancer on top. He ran two races this year, winning by 16 lengths and a neck. (2) Modem seems like a good shot for second, especially since he ran second his last four races. (3) All the Way Jose won two races, more than anyone else left.

Apprentice jockey: An easy one. (1) Evin Roman crushed the other apprentices with more than 800 wins. (2) Katie Clawson did extremely well at Indiana Grand before retiring at age 20 in September. (3) Hector Diaz Jr., despite starting late at 27, should do well back in New York.

Breeder: We’re going to switch last year’s results and go (1) Clearsky Farms and (2) WinStar Farm. WinStar had the numbers, but Clearsky had the quality (Abel Tasman). And, we’ll finish with (3) Adena Springs.

Owner: The question is what do you do with Sol Kumin, who owns a piece of a lot of good horses, including seven wins in Grade 1s. He owns horses through various partnerships. I might have given him a lot more love except for the shameless attempt of one of his employees to sell his case via email to Eclipse voters. Can an Eclipse Award be bought through promotion? We’ll find out. I’ll go old school with (1) Juddmonte Farms, (2) Goldophin Racing and (3) Kumin.

Jockey: This is just a case of looking at the stats. And that’s where (1) Jose Ortiz comes out on top. He won more than $27 million. Then (2) Mike Smith with his huge winnings, 25% win rate and 56% in the money. If he rode more, he’d win by a ton. Looking for the day I can vote for Flavien Prat in this category, he’s that good, but will go with (3) Irad Ortiz Jr., with more than 300 wins.

Trainer: Want to stay West, but have to go East with (1) Chad Brown, who has 47 graded stakes wins, 16 in Grade 1. (2) Bob Baffert, who, despite public perception, does not have a monster-sized barn, always belongs in this top grouping for what he does with his horses. (3) Steve Asmussen has almost 400 wins with a monster-sized barn, plus having likely horse of the year.

Male Turf: It’s hard to ignore (1) World Approval, who won five of his six races, including the Breeders’ Cup Mile. (2) Talismanic won more money and the Breeders’ Cup Turf, but didn’t have the stakes record that World Approval did. (3) Beach Patrol gets our third-place vote for his second in the BC Turf, plus a win in the prestigious Arlington Million.

Female Turf: When in doubt, go with the best story and that’s (1) Lady Eli. She came back from a near-fatal bout with laminitis to go to the top of her game. Sure, she had a troubled trip in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf and finished seventh, but that was after three wins and a second. (2) Off Limits didn’t run in the Breeders’ Cup, but did finish with four straight wins. We give our third-place vote to (3) Wuheida, only because you’re supposed to give some love to the Breeders’ Cup winner in any category.

Horse of the year: I know you’re supposed to build suspense for this award, but there is none. (1) Gun Runner did everything asked of him, winning his last four races, including the Breeders’ Cup Classic and Woodward by 10 ¼. Enough said. I can be criticized for this one, but I’m still going (2) Arrogate for my runner-up spot. Sure, he languished at Del Mar, but who can forget the race of the year — with him winning the Dubai World Cup from dead last. And he won the Pegasus. Final vote goes to underappreciated (3) Collected, who won every race he ran but the Classic, when he finished second to Gun Runner.

We’ll get to the rest of the awards Tuesday.

Santa Anita review

Ippodamia’s Girl made a nice move in the stretch to take the lead, then held off a furious late charge by One Fast Broad to win the $75,000 Blue Norther Stakes over a mile on the grass course. The winning margin was half-a-length.

“I like the way she was training, things were going well,” said winning trainer Mike Pupye. “I was a little leery of the post; you don’t ever like to draw outside because you don’t know how hard it’s going to be. But [jockey] Rafael [Bejarano] did a great job of getting her into the right spot. The pace was moderate and she picked ’em off.”

Ippodamia’s Girl paid $10.60, $5.20 and $4.00.

Santa Anita preview

Again, when you run three graded stakes on Saturday, the rest of the weekend cards can be a little weak. Still, there are nine races, three on the turf, on a special New Year’s Day card. First post is 12:30 p.m.

The feature is the seventh, the $75,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes for older horses going 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course. Now, if you are a newcomer, you may never have heard of Joe Hernandez. He was the race caller at Santa Anita from the day it opened in 1934 until 1972, when he died. During that time, he called 15,587 consecutive races.

The 3-1 favorite in the race is Pee Wee Reese, who has won five of his last seven, including the Grade 3 American Stakes at Santa Anita back in July. Joe Talamo is the jockey for trainer Phil D’Amato.

Om and Richard’s Boy should be solid competition at 7-2.

We don’t usually mention a race such as this, or even root for a horse, but check out the seven in this maiden special weight for 4-year-olds and up. Ziconic, who is better known as a colt by the great Zenyatta, is the 5-2 favorite. He’s winless in 10 tries. Zenyatta has really struggled with her foals and is still looking for a win from her offspring. So, here’s hoping.

Big races review

A look at graded stakes or races worth more $100,000 or more on Sunday.

Fair Grounds: $100,000 Louisiana Futurity, fillies 2 years old, 6 furlongs. Winner: Iona Star ($14.20 to win)

Fair Grounds: $100,000 Louisiana Futurity, 2 years old, 6 furlongs. Winner: Pound for Pound ($45.80)

Note: There was no racing at Aqueduct because of the weather.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

FIRST RACE: No. 6 Buck Duane (5-2)

Start the day with a Pick 5 "single" as this Cal-bred maiden claimer from the Steve Miyadi stable drops in for a tag, shortens up distance and races as a gelding for the first time. He's got tactical speed, is drawn outside and catches a modest field. Let's kick off the New Year with a winner.

Sunday result: El Tovar dead-heated for third in the first race.
