Racing! Congratulations to the Eclipse Award nominees

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we review the Eclipse Award nominations.

The Eclipse Award nominees were announced on Friday with few surprises. Some were perplexed that Collected didn’t make it to the horse of the year finals and instead turf specialist World Approval made the third spot behind presumptive winner Gun Runner and Arrogate.

World Approval did win five out of six. Collected won four out of five before a lackluster performance on opening day at Santa Anita. He even beat Arrogate … twice.

Now, if you are looking for a down-the-middle intro and complete list, go to this story in The Times. (just click here)

Otherwise, things went pretty much to form. The biggest locks are Gun Runner for horse of the year and older dirt male; Evin Roman for apprentice jockey (I wonder if any trainer ever gets rid of an apprentice by saying, “You’re fired.”?) and World Approval for male turf horse.

The next level of locks are West Coast for 3-year-old male; Forever Unbridled for older dirt female and whoever wins the steeplechase because those of us in Southern California really couldn’t care less and wouldn’t notice anyway.

Many of the other categories have obvious choices but you know those East Coast voters can’t be trusted.

The only real big mystery is 2-year-old male to see if Bolt D’Oro’s first three races and a troubled trip in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is more noteworthy than Good Magic’s maiden win in the BC Juvenile.

We’ll know the answers on that coveted Thursday night (who wouldn’t want to have your biggest awards given out on a Thursday?) on Jan. 25 at Stronach’s racino in South Florida. Actually, it makes a lot of sense to hold it two days before the Pegasus World Cup because everyone that matters will likely already be there.

Who goofed, I’ve got to know?

(and it’s not me for once)

Special condolences to the connections of Oscar Performance, who were a finalist for about six or seven minutes. TVG had them as one of the three chosen ones in the 3-year-old male category, then after commercial, TVG came back saying it was really Battle Of Midway joining West Coast and Always Dreaming. Yeah, easy mistake to make.

Grading the newsletter

You know how I hold the TVG guys accountable for their predictions, so let’s see how I did. Well, (chest pumping out) I got 41 of the 51 horses, trainers, owners, jockeys and breeders correct. That’s 80%. It gets you in the baseball Hall of Fame but have no idea how it rates for Eclipse pickers.

All of my top picks made the finals and I never had fewer than two of my picks in any category make it. I swept eight of the categories.

Santa Anita review

First, there was a spill in the sixth race when Sharp Holiday appeared to clip heels and went down, possibly rolling over jockey Laura Werner. Sharp Holiday walked off, seemingly fine, and Werner was taken to the medical center and appeared OK. Thanks to Jeremy Balan of Bloodhorse and Britney Eurton of TVG for all this good news amid something that looked much worse.

OK, the feature was 6 ½ furlongs down the hill and the winner was Gotham Desire, a longshot, won paying $34.60 to win.

“I had so much horse,” said winning jockey Tiago Pereira. “I smooched to her and we got through. She was much the best and we were lucky to get through.”

Ed Moger, Jr. was the winning trainer.

Apologies for misidentifying the favorite in Friday’s newsletter as it was Speakers, not the one-letter-off way we had it. She finished ninth.

And, how about that exacta Bob Ike gave subscribers in the first race (see below). Now are we the only newsletter that is not only free but makes you money?

Santa Anita preview

It’s a nine-race card starting at 12:30 p.m. with two pretty decent stakes races. There are four turf races, first, fourth, seventh and ninth. Other than that, it’s a collection of mostly claiming races. Field sizes remain strong, in race order, 9, 8, 11, 12 (1 also eligible), 7, 11, 10, 9, 12 (2 AE).

As for previewing the two stakes races, go to that link that was provided earlier. You just have to read a little further down. (just click here)

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

SEVENTH RACE: No. 9 Free Rose (10-1)

Comebacker from the Richard Baltas stable has been away since June but has trained in strong fashion and acts like he is ready to fire a good shot off the bench. He figures to be up close to a modest pace and may be able to hold off the closers at a solid price.

Friday Result: Hit first race exacta when Lady Ninja and Sly Humor ran 1-2, returning $16 for every $2 ($1 exacta box) invested.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Ed Burgart’s LA pick of the day

FIRST RACE: No. 8 Awesome Leap (5-2)

He is a win machine, has solid early speed and can fire fresh. With last meet’s leading thoroughbred rider Juan Sanchez in the irons again, gelding should easily clear rivals from posts 4-7 and got the best of main speed foe Mason B three times last year.

Final thought

Still looking to jump the circulation of this newsletter. Can’t beat the price. If you like it, tell someone. If you don’t like it, then you’re probably not reading this.
