Racing! McKinzie scores another big win on road to Kentucky Derby

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we take some early steps on the road to the Kentucky Derby.

Before we get to McKinzie’s easy win in the Sham Stakes let’s go to one of newer features we’ve added.

We’re going to lead off today with another lesson in handicapping by Rob Henie of the WCHR (West Coast Handicapping Report) and the ECHR. The thinking is by breaking down a race a detail you can learn to handicap like the pros.

Today, Rob looks at the fifth race at Santa Anita. Take it away:

FIFTH RACE: This is a $12,500 non-winners of two lifetime event at 1 1/16 miles. This is the lowest level on the circuit for “winners,” a term we’ll use lightly with this type of group. Top selection is CLICKJAB (No. 5). Here’s an example of “free placement,” knowing they can spot at this low level, without much fear of being claimed. Let’s take a look. He’s a 7-year-old who’s run only 14 times, running only three times in 2015, five times in 2016, and only one time last year. Very few, if any, will want a horse who shows up with that type of regularity, thus trainer Mike Puype can drop to the bottom looking for a paycheck. There’s also some encouraging signs here, back in only seven weeks since that last race, telling us the health could be improving, and with good health comes the opportunity to run well. The five drills in between races are also encouraging, and though we’re not expecting a double-digit price (which the WCHR and ECHR are known for), there were some nice lessons here. SOUTHERN THUNDER (No. 7) comes off a maiden win, but so often the mentality of many handicappers with regard to these cheap non-winners of two events is just so backward, here’s what we mean: Horses coming off a maiden win are often given less credence than multiple losers at this level, who’ve already been defeated at this N2L level, many on multiple occasions. Think about that for a second. Why should a horse coming off a possible career catalyst maiden win where confidence was finally gained finishing down the lane in front of the others, be looked at in a more negative light than horses who already won their maiden event, and since, have shown nothing against other multiple losers since that maiden score? Remember, nobody has won a race outside of their maiden victory. A good effort off the immediate liking he showed for the two turns last time out, won’t surprise one bit.

Race Outlook: Not a good group, but at least a couple angles with this pair.

Win Contenders (order of preference): 5-7

X Out Runners (eliminating on the win end): 2,3

Positive Notes:

1 Empire Ruler - Plodding sort should appreciate this more methodical distance.

Negative Notes:

9 Moonlight Blue – Kent Desormeaux and Vladimir Cerin have been clicking often in recent weeks, but Vladimir appears to be throwing the white flag up with this guy right now. We’ll look to beat.

TOP PICK: CLICKJAB (#5 3-1 Conner)

SECOND CHOICE: SOUTHERN THUNDER (#7 12-1 Frey)

The West Coast Handicapping Report can be found at https://www.westcoasthorseracing.com It has been endorsed by leading trainers, handicappers and industry sources.

Who goofed? Part 2

The unfortunate posting of the wrong horse during the TVG telecast of the Eclipse nominees was cleared up and credit to the Eclipse Awards for owning up to it. This note from Keith Chamblin, chief operating officer of the NTRA and a member of the Eclipse Award steering committee, hit my inbox Saturday morning.

“I wanted to let you know that TVG was provided erroneous information by the Eclipse Awards. It was entirely our mistake and we sincerely apologize to the connections of Oscar Performance and to TVG. Thankfully, we were able to correct the mistake within minutes.”

And, for the record, Mike Joyce of TVG handled the on-air part of that correction as effortlessly and professionally as possible. Move along, nothing to see here.

Santa Anita review

Good day on Saturday, as it looks as if McKinze is the real deal for trainer Bob Baffert. The colt picks up 10 more Derby qualifying points, bringing him to 20. If you get to 30, you usually make the field.

It’s no surprise that Baffert is masterfully brining along this colt. He removed blinkers to relax the horse after a much tougher race in the Los Alamitos Futurity, a race he finished second but was placed first after Solomini was disqualified.

I know this is going to seem like a bait and switch, but for the best look at Saturday’s Sham Stakes, please check out the story by my colleague Mike Tierney. (just click right here).

Santa Anita preview

Not a bad card for a Sunday after two graded stakes on Saturday. But, let’s look at the sixth race. It’s 6 furlongs for $10,000 claimers that are 4 or older. But here’s the catch. It’s restricted to trainers with fewer than 20 horses in California. This is one of those boutique races that Santa Anita boss Tim Ritvo has asked to be written for the little guy.

The purse is only $18,000 but that’s $2,000 more than a non-restricted $12,500 claiming race in the fifth. There are 12 horses entered in the sixth. Wish they could all win.

OK, on to the feature. It’s the eighth race, the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Ynez Stakes over 7 furlongs for 3-year-old fillies. It’s a Kentucky Oaks points race, so it’s worth watching. Unique Bella, who is up for an Eclipse Award, won this race last year in her 3-year-old debut.

A Mark Casse shipper, Win The War, is the 5-2 favorite. She is undefeated in two tries, one on turf and one on synthetic. Well see how she likes the real stuff. Midnight Bisou is the second favorite at 3-1 after two second place finishes, the last by a nose in the Desi Arnaz at Del Mar. She gets her third new jockey, with Mike Smith taking over for Rafael Bejarano, who took over from Tiago Pereira. The filly is trained by Bill Spawr.

NINTH RACE No. 10 Red Livy (7-2)

Let's try to close out the abbreviated week with a winner as Red Livy has a good shot to take this field gate to wire. The Phil D'Amato-trained filly appears to be the quickest early, is drawn favorably outside and boasts two wins over the downhill course.

Saturday’s Result: Free Rose faded in mid-stretch to finish off the board.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Ed Burgart LA play of the day

SECOND RACE: No. 6 Part Of My Heart (5-2)

She has been crying to run this longer distance, gets a comfortable outside post draw and should find a positive pace scenario to aid her late run. She missed the break two outs ago when rallying for second at 4 furlongs and had the rail draw in last third-place outing vs. a wire-to-wire winner. Speed rivals Sea Secret and Just A Gem figure to ensure a lively pace.
